St. Christoph am Arlberg is one of the smallest and highest ski areas in Austria – internationally known for its important role in the development of alpine skiing. For the World Ski Championships 2001, the Austrian Ski Association urgently needed a new sports hall with gym, bar and offices for 45 employees. There was neither enough money nor enough time for that. A big challenge through these “impossible” conditions.
The cost-optimized construction led to an “industrial hall” with steel frames, prefabricated single elements and aluminum panels. The eight roof girders are truss-like and, thanks to their height, allow the installation of the staff projectile. The flat roof and sloping facade reduce the risk of snow and roof avalanches. The expressive sky-blue color of the outer skin and the generous building-high glazing of the southeast corner set self-confident accents despite the strict budget.
After just five months of construction, the hall was opened on time for the World Ski Championships.
